Hi Goddesses,

First of all, my sincerest apologies for my absence. Many of you may have heard – that my beloved son, Sky, made his transition last November, just before the holidays. Although he was only 22 years old, he had struggled with opiate addiction for three difficult years. Amid overdose scares, journeys through rehab, and heart-wrenching worry when he didn’t show up where he was supposed to, I held space for his healing. I loved him. I visited him in rehab and in the hospital through lung surgery.

I prayed that he would not become a statistic – another young life taken by the opiate crisis. And I prayed every day that he be freed from addiction. Instead, he passed away quietly in his bedroom in our home sometime in the night of November 8th, 2019. According to police deputies, there was a “bad batch” on the street – heroine laced with fentanyl and my son, my angel had been the third fatality that morning. In fact, the police officers recognized him from their favorite restaurant. He was the cook who had made their breakfast for the past few months. He was the big burly guy with the baby face who cracked jokes from behind the counter. He would not be making their breakfast on that Saturday morning. Instead, they would go to the restaurant, hats in hand and inform the owners that Sky would not be coming in that morning… or any other.

I found him there in his bed at 6 am when I knocked on the door to wake him for work. He had never missed a day. He loved his job, his friends loved him, and he even liked his AA meetings. That’s what he told me the night before. Ending the sentence with “I love you, Mom.” “I love you too, Sky.” And that was that. Our last words to each other.

I have so much more to write and so much more to say, but most of all, I want to say that Sky, although he did in fact become 1 of the over 500,000 people who were lost to the opiate crisis last decade, he like all of the others, is not a statistic. And by the way, 500,000 is a number of humans greater than the population of Atlanta, greater than Miami, greater in fact than most American cites. And that is not OK. He is my son. He is a brother, a cousin, a nephew, and a treasured friend, a talented writer, a practical joker, and his smile is pure joy. My only son, my Sky. He lights my stars now as he did in life and I will look forward to the day that we meet again until my job here on Earth is done.

What are We up to?
